About Cows …

I’d like to say something about … cows. I mean, I’ve got to. Perhaps it is because I grew up in the country. Or maybe because I live in a small town in Texas. By no means does my current life transpire in what people would call ‘country,’ but small towns are wedged somewhere in between – in between a municipality (that is decidedly qualified as a ‘city’) and country. Every day, as I drive, I’m greeted by the long stretches of land, cornfields, and pastures. Although the land may house a major company, the lawns are peppered by graceful, placid Longhorns. An occasional horse, but mostly cattle, roam these fields. It is as though part of geography wants to join the ‘city life’ but is still firmly holding onto the country life.

Just think, when you look upon a cow chewing cud in the field of green, it is the same scene that existed a thousand years ago, a hundred, a decade, yesterday … today. I see it every day when I drive … anywhere, really. I find temporary peace in it. There is something calming about … cows … in a field, something wholesome. It shuts out all the digital noise that is so maddening sometimes. For a brief moment, I feel weightless almost, encapsulated in the ageless scene. I find it utterly fascinating that centuries ago, a pair of eyes glanced at a field and saw what I see … cows amid the grasses. Its simplicity and timelessness ground me.
